Modern monetary unit of Angola is the kwanza. In circulation there are coins in nominal value 10, 50 centimos and 1, 2, 5 kwanzas.

The Monetary unit a kwanza has been manufactured after reception of independence by Angola. It has replaced escudo face value and was equal 100 lveis. The first coins left in the circulation without a date of issue, on them date of declaration of independence of Angola - 1975 has been rapped out on November, 11th only. They were dignity in 10, 20, 50 lveis and 1, 2, 5 and 10 kwanzas. The coin of 20 kwanzas has been manufactured in 1978. The last year issue of coins of that period was 1979.

In 1990 there was a new issue of the Angola money. New a kwanza interchanged on old face value, but only at a rate of 5 % from the monetary stock which was in circulation. Other old token moneys interchanged on the state securities. In 1995 new a kwanza reajustado have replaced previous a kwanza on a parity 1:1000. Strong inflation in Angola did not allow to manufacture a coin.

In 1999, the new currency under the name simply kwanza has been entered. Unlike the first the kwanza, this monetary unit was equal 100 centimos. To introduction of this currency there was an issue of coins. Though the kwanza has had on the first pairs loss from high rates of inflation, its significance now was stabilised. Coins in 10 and 50 centimos are not used any more as their significances are very small.
