Monetary unit of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is the birr which consists of 100 cents. In monetary circulation there are coins in nominal value 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents.

Obverses of the Ethiopian coins of all nominal values are decorated by the stylised plotting of a head of a lion which is framed by the Arabian ligature. On a reverse of a coin of denomination in 1 cent the plotting of the peasant ploughing the earth on two oxen, a reverse of a coin of denomination of 5 cents is seated contains the plotting of the armed Ethiopian, on the back coins in 10 cents the antelope is represented, and the reverse of a coin of denomination of 25 cents is decorated by the plotting dancing national dance of the man and the woman with the lifted hands.

On a reverse of a coin in nominal value of 50 cents the composition consisting of five human figures is seated.

The Coin in nominal value 1 cent is produced of aluminium, a coin of denomination in 5 and 10 cents - from a copper-zinc alloy, a coin in 25 and 50 cents - from a Copper-Nickel. Coins of two last nominal values have a corrugated herd, for the others the smooth herd is characteristic. Stamping dates are indicated on the Ethiopian calendar which is lagging behind from western for 8 years.
