Republic Ghana Monetary unit is cedi which is equal 100 pesewas. In a cash turn-over there are coins of denomination 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 pesewas and 1 cedi.

The First coins of Ghana - cedi have been manufactured in 1965-1967 of denomination in 5, 10, 25 and 50 pesewas. In smaller nominal values there was no necessity as coins 1/2 and 1 pennies, as 1/2 and 1 pesewa continued to circulate. On all coins the portrait of politician Kvame Nkruma has been represented.

In 1967 coins of cedi of the second issue have been entered into the circulation, nominal value 1/2, 1 2 1/2, 5, 10 and 20 pesewas. Coins of 50 pesewas and 1 cedi have been entered in 1979. In 1984 the coin 5 cedis has been manufactured. But all earlier rapped out coins left the circulation in connection with inflation. In 1991 coins 10, 20, 50 and 100 cedis, and then 200 and 500 cedis in 1996 have been entered. Coins of these six dignities still being in circulation. Nevertheless, 10 cedis (~ 0,1 cents of the USA) and 20 cedis (~ 0,2 cents of the USA) left circulation because of their small cost.

Since July, 1st, 2007 denomination has been manufactured, the third issue of cedi interchanged with old money on 1:10 000. In the circulation there were new coins 1 pesewa (100 old cedis), 5 pesewas (500), 10 pesewas (1000), 20 pesewas (2000), 50 pesewas (5000) and 1 cedis (10 000).
