Republic Madagascar Monetary unit is ariaries which consists of 100 centimes. In monetary circulation there are coins of denomination 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 ariaries.

In 1961 in Madagascar the name of nominal values of coins and notes, was simultaneously designated in francs and ariaries. In the first issues of token moneys the name of francs precipitated out large letters, but since 1978, on coins began to write dignity expressed only to ariaries. Except absence a word "franc" the design of a coin remained without changes. In 1965 coins have been entered into the circulation 1 franc (iraimbilanja) and 2 francs (venty sy kirobo), then 5 francs (ariaries) in 1966 and 10 and 20 francs (2 and 4 ariaries) in 1970. The term "venty sy kirobo" occurs from the names used in 19 century from 1 / 6 and 1 / of 4 silver dollar as 1/6 + 1/4=5/12 from 5 francs makes about 2 francs.

In 1978 coins 10 and 20 ariaries which any more had no designation in francs have been manufactured. Since 1992 new coins 5 and 50 ariaries began to leave.
