Monetary unit of Armenia is drams which consists of 100 lumas. In circulation there are coins of denomination of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 drams, lumas from the circulation are withdrawn.

The First drams have occurbed in Armenia during the period with 1199 for 1375, in the form of silver coins.

On September, 21st, 1991 after a national referendum independence of Republic Armenia of Soviet Union has been proclaimed. On March, 27th, 1993 the Republic Armenia Central bank has been founded. However old Soviet notes were a lawful legal tender till November, 1993. Modern drams have been entered on November, 22nd, 1993, on a parity to the Soviet rubles at a rate of 200 rubles=1 drams.

The Republic Armenia Central bank in 1994 had been manufactured coins of denomination in 10, 20 and 50 lumas, 1, 3, 5 and 10 drams. All of them have been executed from aluminium. In 2003 and 2004 the fresh consignment of coins consisting of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 drams has been manufactured. 10 drams produced of aluminium, 20 drams from a copper-plated steel, 50 drams from a steel the plated brass, 100 drams from a Nickel-plated steel and 200 drams from a brass. The coin in 500 drams is a bimetallic coin with a brass external ring and the center a Copper-Nickel. Also the Republic Armenia Central bank manufactures memorable coins.
