The Kips have been entered in 1952, having replaced the French Indochina piastre face value. The kips (the piastre in French also is called) have been divided on 100 att or cents (in French: centimes). Coins of a series of 1952 have been manufactured by nominal value 10, 20 and 50 att, with the French and Laotian inscription. They were produced of aluminium, with an aperture in the center.

In 1979 currency reform has taken place, varied 100 old kips (Patet Lao) on one new kips. In 1980 a new series of coins of denomination in 10, 20 and 50 att, then in 1985 - 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 kips has been manufactured. However because of chronic inflation no coins in circulation in Laos are present now.
