National monetary unit of Uzbekistan is soms. In circulation there are coins of denomination of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 soms.

As well as in other republics of the former Soviet Union Uzbekistan continued to use the Soviet ruble after independence finding. On July, 26th, 1993, the russian ruble and old Soviet ruble have been entered into the circulation has ceased to be a lawful legal tender in Russia. Some states the former republics USSR already had the native currencies, some have decided to continue to use till 1993 the Soviet ruble, and some preferred to use and a new russian ruble.

Uzbekistan has replaced ruble of soms at par value in November, 15th, 1993. In the first issue of token moneys there were only notes. On July, 1st, 1994, the second issue of soms has been entered at an exchange at a rate of 1 new soms=1000 old soms. At date of introduction, 1 US dollar equaled 25 soms.

Two series of coins were produced for the second issue. They can be distinguished easily on inscriptions used for Uzbekistan. The first series has been written on Cyrillics, and the second series in a Latin. First two anniversary coins manufactured in Post-Soviet Uzbekistan on September, 1st, 1994, have been devoted the third anniversary of independence of republic and had nominal value of 10 soms.
