Republic Romania Monetary unit is the leu which consists of 100 bans. In the cash circulation there are coins of denomination of 1, 5, 10, 50 bans.

The Republic Romania is member country the European union .

In 1952 to Romania of denomination coins have been entered into 1, 3, 5, 10 and 25 bans. Coins 1, 3 and 5 bans were minted from Aluminum-Bronze an alloy, other nominal values - from Copper-Nickel. In 1955 Copper-Nickel coins of 50 bans have been added. In 1960 new coins from a Nickel-plated steel of 15 and 25 bans, in 1963 - 1 and 3 leus have been manufactured. Aluminium coins of 5 leus have been entered in 1978.

After the termination of a communistic mode, the new series of the coins consisting of 1 leu from a steel by covered bronze 1990 and 1992 for years has been entered into the period between, 5 and 10 leus from a Nickel-plated steel, 20 and 50 leus from a brass-plated steel and the nickeled 100 leus. Owing to strong inflation in Romania have manufactured coins of large nominal values - 500 leus in 1999, 1000 leus in 2000 and 5000 leus in 2001. All these coins have undergone to criticism for their inconvenience in use. Coins of 500 leus were very thick (about 0,3 sm). Despite the small size, such coins for pocket filling were required all some. The coin of 5000 leus, the dihexagonal form, was very inconvenient in circulation and use in slot machines.

In 2005 following coins have been entered into the circulation: 1, 5, 10, 50 bans. Coins 1 ban are not used almost. In practice, in price retail trade 5 bans are always approximated to the proximate. New coins also is exposed to criticism. Their size and plain design do coins indiscernible for people with a poor eyesight. Quality of a material of coins, also leaves much to be desired - coins acidify and darken within several weeks when issued.
